Leonard Freed

1929 — 2006

Leonard Freed was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1929. Throughout his life, the documentary photographer captured important social and political movements, including the civil rights movement in the US and the building of the Berlin Wall. He joined Magnum Photos in the 1960s and continued to document social injustices around the world.

Some of his most important photographs, which focus on the struggle for equality and freedom, are in his photo books „Black in White America“ and „Police Work“. Freed died in 2006, but his powerful and important images are still displayed in exhibitions around the world.
