Sex, beauty, suffering – Nan Goldin's photographs are characterized by unsparing honesty and pure moments; often combined with an inimitable snapshot aesthetic and a strong sense of empathy. Nan Goldin's most famous work: "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency" (1985) – nearly 700 images from her life in New York in the 1970s and 80s.
Nan Goldin also lived in Berlin for four years, where she was part of the vibrant queer subculture scene of drags, trans people, and gays. She lived with and portrayed the protagonists of her paintings. Goldin is considered a pioneer of diary photography and has exhibited at the Louvre, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Tate Modern, among other venues. Her works have fetched six-figure sums at auction.
