Peter Brüchmann grew up in Berlin. From 1949 to 1952, he was trained by portrait and fashion photographer Lotte Söhring and then completed a traineeship at the German Press Agency (dpa). Brüchmann worked as a photographer for media such as Constanze, Schöner Wohnen, Bild am Sonntag, Revue, Quick, Twen and Playboy.
Brüchmann first photographed in black and white, later in color. From the 1950s to the 1980s, he portrayed numerous stage, film, literary and music stars, including Sharon Tate, Brigitte Bardot, Grace Kelly, Chet Baker, Ray Charles, Romy Schneider, Sammy Davis Jr, Faye Dunaway and Hildegard Knef.
