The story behindThe title of the work does not come from the artist himself. It was titled ” Männerkopf” (“Man’s Head”) by Wolfgang Werner (Bremen). Officially, the work is untitled.

According to the inscription overleaf, the previous owner, Wolfgang Werner, received it from the artist’s widow, Helene Rohlfs, called “Kalli” (1892-1990), who administered the Rohlfs estate.

Stamped “Ausmeyer & Gerling Bremen – Vergolderei u. Rahmen Fabrik” on the reverse side.

On the back you can also read: „Von Tante Kalli Rohlfs geschenkt. Ein typischer Männerkopf der 1920er. Wertvoll bei Verkauf.“ (“Given by Aunt Kalli Rohlfs. A typical male head of the 1920s. Valuable when sold.”)
