W. Utermann 1987, Christian Rohlfs, Das druckgraphische Gesamtwerk, Nr. 205
The story behindChristian Rohlfs liked to give his woodcuts special treatment, he printed them in colour, only partially or also several times on top of each other, experimented with the most diverse printing possibilities such as rubbing, rolling up, etc. on the most diverse supports and used from the finest Japanese paper to coarse linen manifold, sometimes coloured backgrounds, occasionally he coloured the prints or even painted over them after a longer period of time and dated them (cf.: P. Vogt 1960, Christian Rohlfs, Das graphische Werk, p. 11 ff.). In this case, the artist also reworked the printing block, hatching the larger areas, so that here we have a previously unrecorded condition.
