"Joan Miró – Neue Horizonte" at the Zentrum Paul Klee, Bern (Switzerland) | until May 7, 2023

A journey through the unknown oeuvre of the master: Joan MirĂł was an artist known for his colourful surrealist dream worlds. But from 1956, when he finally moved into his own large studio in Palma de Mallorca, the Catalan artist expanded his concept of painting in a hitherto unknown way. He began to question all his previous work, to revise early works or to resume work on unfinished works. This moment of self-criticism and new beginnings formed the starting point for the exhibition, which is now on show in Switzerland for the first time. From then on, MirĂł felt that conventional painting at the easel was a restriction and sought new forms of expression. For example, he “painted” with fire and scissors instead of a brush, extended his technique to textiles or painted over classical paintings bought at the flea market with impulsive brushstrokes. The exhibition comprises a total of 74 works, mainly from the late 1960s, the 1970s and the early 1980s. The works are on view in Switzerland for the first time and offer a fascinating insight into the unknown oeuvre of the master.
